As we describe what we are pursuing in the recovery of classical and Christian education, we have to remember that words have connotations as well as denotations. For example, it would be quite proper for the brochures of your school to say, among other things, that you were “striving for excellence.” Who could be against striving for excellence? Sounds like a great thing to do. Most excellent. But at the same time, you would never dream of saying, in that same brochure, that you were seeking to cultivate an “atmosphere of elitism.” Nobody wants elitism.
